My job allows me to travel quite a bit, for work and for pleasure. One of the most memorable experiences I had was traveling through Myanmar. I stayed in a small village during a festival there. It was amazing experiencing this celebration, eating with families, and just seeing how happy they were with very little material things.
It really opened my eyes. So much so that I actually had the “medicine man” of the village tattoo me. Now, whenever I am stressed or thinking about how bad something is, I see the tattoo and realize how happy I should be with what I have.

Unique Adventures with Local Insights
I once traveled to Jordan five years ago. I visited the ancient city of Petra and missed the last bus back to Aqaba, where my hostel was located. I was inclined to just get a bed in a standard hostel closer to the city center where another backpacker I met that day was staying, but I ended up choosing to rent an Airbnb from a Bedouin merchant I got to talking with. So I decided to go with him and hopped on his donkey. Yes, we literally rode donkeys, which was a first-time experience for me. The view was gorgeous—I couldn’t believe these locals witnessed this every evening.
Once we arrived at his Airbnb, we ate some homemade dinner, and they smoked shisha. It was a lovely experience. I also met the merchant’s other friend, and he invited me to come with him the following day to visit his relatives illegally living in caves within Petra. It sounded intriguing, so I agreed.
We hiked around an area of Petra most tourists never see. They showed me a cave with actual skulls inside, ancient paintings on cave walls from the Nabatean era, and we found ancient Roman coins. I also met and conversed with his relatives and friends living in caves and learned about why they prefer to live there and how they survive.
It was all fascinating to me. I almost felt like an anthropologist or something. And I imagine I never would have had this experience had I just booked a standard hotel and hung out with the other backpackers I met that day. As a solo traveler, you’ve got to be careful and use your judgment in these kinds of situations, but saying yes to these kinds of opportunities can lead you to some cool adventures.
