    When moving to a new city, I typically join some type of park district intramural sports league. After my most recent move, I joined a kickball league and a volleyball league. I didn’t know anyone—I emailed the park district and signed up as a free agent so teams who were short a couple of players could pick up free agents. I got put on a great team; we’d go out for drinks after most games, and it was a great way to meet people.

    If sports isn’t your cup of tea, go check out Meetup.com. Some groups ride bikes together and go on hikes together, and there are cryptocurrency groups—literally anything you’re interested in, you can find a group of like-minded people to do it with.

    One thing I like about Meetup groups is that it’s a little less intimidating than just going out to a bar trying to make friends, and there’s typically some activity the group is centered on, so A) you already have a common interest and B) you’re doing an activity. There’s not this pressure of keeping conversations going with nothing else to do.

    That’s why I invested in a light-canceling mask. I used to have a slim, silky eye covering that was the equivalent of draping some tissue paper over my lids; this one is heavy-duty and more like a blackout curtain.

    It’s unbelievable how much easier it is to rest when you’ve tricked your mind and body into thinking it’s nighttime, and alongside a pair of good earplugs, I’m now able to grab at least a few hours of sleep consistently.

    Select Seats with Extra Space

    Lately, I’ve been doing more traveling to Vietnam from the United States, a lengthy 16-hour flight to the other side of the world. Sitting for such extended periods can be very uncomfortable, especially if you end up next to larger individuals who take up a significant amount of space.

    I had to consider the option of upgrading to a higher-class ticket for more comfort. I found that the price almost doubled, which was a bit outrageous. However, during my research, I discovered that for less than $100, I could choose my seat on the plane. Exploring this further, I noticed that the front row of each section offers extra legroom, a significant perk for taller individuals.

     

    Surprisingly, at the back of the plane, there’s a section with only two seats per row, and in between them is a sizable gap, which could accommodate another two seats. This arrangement provides a substantial advantage, even compared to the premium class, as the premium class seat is barely wider than the economy class, all at the affordable cost of selecting a seat.

    Only recently have I found a system that works for me, and annoyingly, it’s the incredibly simple approach of time-blocking. I have created a timetable that breaks my tasks down into 30-minute chunks throughout the week. In this way, I know that I am dedicating time to all my responsibilities evenly and proportionately.

    Emails have been relegated to small chunks throughout the day. While it still requires discipline, the impact has been incredible, which only further reinforces my dedication to the timetable.

    Commit to incremental progress, not perfection. Often, procrastination stems from the paralyzing expectation that we must tackle goals in an all-or-nothing, perfect-or-bust manner. This pressure is counterproductive. Forget marathon bursts and aim for consistency instead.

    Rather than expecting yourself to sit and work for 8 hours straight in some epic power session, set a goal of showing up consistently for 30-60 minute intervals spread throughout your day. Keep the session lengths short and achievable, so they feel less intimidating to start. Just tell yourself you only need to make a bit of progress in that time.

    Starting small is easier than going all out, but those tiny steps compound over time. The sense of ongoing accomplishment keeps motivation high, even when progress feels slow. Completing what you planned for each session also breeds confidence and momentum. Perfect days are unlikely, but progress is certain when we commit to those baby steps that inch us forward.

    When I was younger, I had a real problem with procrastinating. And as anyone who’s been there knows, it’s not actually pleasant or satisfying to put off work.     The solution for me was setting designated break times. During these periods, thinking about work was forbidden. I could take twenty minutes to watch a show or scroll on my phone without stress looming over me.

    But when my timer went off, I had to return to the task at hand. Because these mini-breaks were more satisfying than double the amount of time spent procrastinating, I was able to get back to productivity and no longer felt the urge to push work off until tomorrow.

    Create Structure to Prevent Overwhelm

    I’ve found that the key to avoiding procrastination—for me—is creating structure. One of the main reasons I procrastinate is because I look at everything that I need to do and feel a little overwhelmed, not knowing where to start. By creating a structure for my day, week, or month, I know what needs to be done, what I can hold off on, and what needs to be prioritized.

    When you know what needs to be done and when it needs to be done, you can just get started on your tasks for the day instead of wasting time looking at everything you have to do, getting distracted with other tasks, etc.

    On that note, it’s important to also include space for ad hoc work. This means that anything that suddenly pops up won’t throw your entire day off, and you’ll have the time to look at this ad hoc work and determine how urgent it actually is.

    A Permanent Memory from Myanmar

    One of the most amazing adventures I had while abroad was getting a tattoo by the “medicine man” from a small village in Myanmar. I had heard about him from some locals and made the long three-hour trek via truck and boat to visit him. I showed up unannounced, and he was pleased to do a tattoo on me the traditional way.

    About a dozen kids from the village watched as well. It only took about an hour and was done in his small hut. The cost was just a donation to the village. An amazing experience I will never forget, as it is tattooed on me!

    By focusing on the daily activity and the daily wins and successes, one creates a very valuable cycle of consistent motivation and small wins. Compare this process by checking daily whether the end goal has been achieved; that’s a recipe for overwhelm and, ultimately, failure.

These are crucial for helping our business grow, but if there is a crisis—such as a key member of staff taking ill or leaving—understanding our priorities and being willing to adapt stops us from getting overwhelmed, helps us stay targeted, and keeps us working effectively.

    My go-to when I first started traveling the world, and later on as a remote worker, was to pick out gyms in the area. I would go to them with the “intention” of joining, but would ask them to provide me with a guest pass to try it first.

    Initially, as a traveler, this was to conserve my funds. But later on, as a worker, I had the money. The thrill was the challenge of seeing how many freebies I could get in each city. The thrill of the chase kept my motivation high but also pushed me to experience the full complement of the gym and health club facilities, as I knew it was a temporary thing.

    Frequent movers should avoid health club joining fees, and guest pass rates for short periods add up quickly to a year’s membership price-wise.

    I used to strategically choose accommodation central to multiple gyms. This minimized the distance should I get a free pass, as I know (as a previous health club manager) that any obstacle, like commuting, can be an excuse to skip the gym.

    Replicate Home Routines on Road

    As a recruiter, my job keeps me moving. I’m committed to understanding each and every client on a personal level, and that means traveling from headquarters to offices to factories—the truth is, I never know what each day will bring.

I like to connect in-person with clients whenever I can, and in the industrial sector, that can mean visiting isolated sites where the only places to stay are low-budget hotels without many amenities. To ensure my mental and physical health stays intact, I’ve turned to apps.

    Meditation apps like Calm help me stay grounded when I’m miles away from my yoga class, and BetterHelp is there should I need a therapist to chat with when I’m on the road. I work out daily with Nike Training Club, and love that they have classes especially designed to be done in small spaces without equipment or weights.

    It took a few tries to find the apps best suited to keeping me happy and fit on the road, so I recommend downloading multiple apps and taking advantage of trial periods until you find what perfectly meets your needs.

    Pack Healthy Food and Snacks

    As a former stand-up comedian, I spent a lot of time on the road. Traveling to small towns featured many temptations, including the desire to stop at the various fast-food joints that littered the large, and mostly empty, land of Canada.

    On my first road gig, that’s mostly all that I consumed. It was easy, quick, and felt cheap, but I quickly realized how big a hole it burned in my wallet (not so much the adding weight part, I was 23 at the time).

    One of the easiest ways to be healthy on the road is to accept that you are breaking free of your normal life, and having an understanding that when free of your old habits, the bad ones have an easy way of sneaking in.

    I found that packing (relatively) healthy food by measuring out how many meals I would be eating was a lifesaver.

    This included filling snacks that could easily fit in sandwich bags or small containers, and especially things that I like to eat, not a list of things that feel like a punishment (looking at you, kale).

    The biggest tip I can give for better travel photography is to photograph when there’s good light. That usually means photographing in the morning and evening around the golden hour. You don’t have to photograph exactly during the golden hour, but it helps. The harshest light, which is more likely to give you uninspiring results, is at midday.

    Related to this, your photography will improve immensely if you pay attention to the light when you’re taking photos, regardless of what time of day it is. Finding compositions where there are pockets of light and shadow within the frame is a great way to create dramatic, dynamic photos that capture the viewers’ attention.

    An additional tip I would give is to put some thought into your composition. Instead of just taking a photo of something straight on, think of an object or person that you can put in the foreground to create a layered composition.

    I used to try to capture the “perfect” photos when I was traveling. Beautiful scenes that were empty of people and, frankly, entirely unrealistic as a result. I finally realized that there’s no avoiding the people, especially when I’m photographing popular tourist destinations that always attract a crowd.

    So, I started embracing capturing those images and making a point of including the people. Some of my favorite travel photos now are the ones where it’s obvious there’s a crowd of people enjoying the scenery or moving through the scene. I’ll play with slow-shutter speeds to catch the blur of them moving around or shoot through them at wide apertures to blur them and focus on the main subject. I love the challenge of capturing a popular scene even with the crowds!
